NCCC AmeriCorps Volunteers Help in Ontonagon

Thanks to the support of Porcupine Mountains Wlderness State Park, eight NCCC AmeriCorps volunteers have a place to stay while they work with us for two weeks to winterize the homes of income-qualified Ontonagon residences.

The team, Maple 5, has been working in different locations around the country for a year and now they are finishing off their commitment on the shores of Lake Superior – what a way to wrap things up!

The project is part of a community energy management collaboration sponsored by the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, led by WUPPDR (Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region).  Other components of the project include auditing and benchmarking the assets owned by three western U.P. communities: the Village of L’Anse, the Village of Ontonagon, and Grant Township.

These analyses give the municipalities the basis of a community energy plan, and deliver a road map for them to determine which upgrades to which buildings will give the biggest return on investment first.

New Power Tour is looking forward to helping put boots-on-the-ground to make Ontonagon residents warmer this winter – and save them some money on their heat bills.
