SANDY AITTAMA: BALTIC, MI

2-1

SANDY OWNS THE WHOLE OF A TYPICAL MINING
‘HALF-HOUSE.’

THERE ARE A LOT OF THESE TO BE FOUND IN TOWNS WITH A MINING HERITAGE.

2-2

SHE HEATS WITH WOOD.

2-3

THIS IS THE BACK OF THE HOUSE.
OFF TO THE RIGHT, YOU CAN SEE A LITTLE ADDITION.

THAT’S THE BATHROOM, AND HER HOT WATER PIPES ARE IN THE CRAWL SPACE UNDERNEATH, WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE YELLOW/ORANGE INSULATION AT THE BOTTOM.

2-4

IT WAS BUILT ON POSTS, WITH PARTICLE-BOARD WALLS, AND THIS (VERY AGING AND INEFFECTIVE) INSULATION.

EVERY WINTER SANDY’S PIPES WOULD FREEZE, AND SHE RAN A GARDEN HOSE OVER FROM THE NEIGHBOR’S HOUSE TO HAVE RUNNING WATER.

2-5

SHE FORESTALLED THAT SITUATION EVERY FALL,

BY HANGING THIS SPACE HEATER IN THE CRAWL SPACE
1500 WATTS BLASTING AWAY AT WINTER, AVERAGING AN EXTRA $30/MONTH.

2-6

THIS PHOTO WAS TAKEN AFTER WE’D STARTED INSULATING WITH FIBERGLASS, FOAM BOARD AND SPRAY FOAM.

IT SHOWS HOW THE SPACE HEATER WAS AIMED AT THE WATER PIPES.

2-7

HERE IS THE NEW AND IMPROVED CRAWL SPACE,

WITH BLUEBOARD INSULATION ALL AROUND THE PARTICLE BOARD ON THE INSIDE.
