ANGELINA THERRIAN: CALUMET, MI

5-1

ANGELINA THERRIAN IS NEARLY 90.

SHE’S SHARP AS A TACK.

5-2

HERE SHE IS WITH DAUGHTER MARLAIN AND GRANDSON FELIZE.

THEY (DAUGHTER’S FAMILY) TRAVEL AS MISSIONARIES MOST OF THE YEAR.

5-3

ANGELINA HAS LIVED IN THIS TRAILER (circa 1962!) SINCE THE 1970s.

THERE WAS AN UNHEATED ADDITION, WHICH THE LADDERS ARE LEANING AGAINST.

IT GOT COLD IN THERE.
MOISTURE CONDENSED, MOLDING THE CEILING.

5-4

WE DECIDED TO INSULATE AND PUT A RUBBER ROOF OVER THIS (NOT TOO SHABBY) ROOF.

5-5

WE ALSO SPLIT INTO TEAMS TO REPLACE THE BAD PARTICLE BOARD CEILING INSIDE THE LAUNDRY ROOM ADDITION.

5-6

THAT’S ME CUTTING DRYWALL INTO TWO-INCH STRIPS WHICH WE PUT AROUND THE PERIMETER OF THE ROOF UNDERNEATH A 2X4 FRAME.

5-7

HERE A HORIZONS STUDENT MOVES INSULATION
FROM TRUCK TO ROOF.

SHE’S ALSO INITIATING A WEEKLY “HEALTHY LUNCH” PROGRAM THAT THE STUDENTS COOK THEMSELVES.
ROCK THAT!

5-8

MORE TEAMWORK.

5-9

ON THE ROOF:

SLIDING THE INSULATION UP AGAINST THE 2x4s THAT HANDY GUY JEFF FRAMED IN WHILE WE WERE WAITING FOR STUDENTS TO ARRIVE.

5-10

JEFF FLAM:
LOCAL CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTOR THAT MENTORS TO THE STUDENTS.

WE ARE VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE HIM ABOARD.

HERE’S A LINK TO HIS FACEBOOK PAGE.

5-11

WHILE WE’RE AT IT, THIS IS CHRIS DAVIDSON, PRINCIPAL OF HORIZONS ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL.

HE IS A GREAT MENTOR AS WELL.

5-13

UP ON THE ROOF AGAIN, FASTENING THE FOAM INSULATION DOWN.

THIS 2″ INSULATION HAS AN R VALUE OF 15.

THAT MEANS IT HAS THE INSULATIVE VALUE OF 15 INCHES OF PINE.

5-14

THERE IT BE.

5-15

COMICAL!

5-16

THIS IS THE RUBBER ROOF, DRYING OUT IN THE SUN.

JEFF DONATED BOTH THIS AND THE INSULATION, WHICH HE HAPPENED TO HAVE IN HIS GARAGE.  THANKS, JEFF!

DOG: HIGGINS.  IT’S A SHE.

ALSO, THIS IS NOT ANGELINA’S TRAILER.
IT’S AN EMPTY ONE NEXT DOOR.

5-17

RUBBER ROOF IS UP.

CUTTING IT TO FIT.

5-18

NOW IT’S TIME TO GLUE IT ON!

5-19

ROLLING IT TO THE RIGHT THICKNESS IS CALLED ‘SPIDER-WEBBING.’

5-20

GLUING WHERE THE ADDITION MEETS THE TRAILER.

5-21

FASTENING THE ‘TERM BAR’ (TERMINAL BAR).

HOLDS RUBBER ROOF IN PLACE AND SEALS IT TIGHTLY.

5-22

TEAMWORK!

5-23

NOW FOR THE INSIDE:

MTU ETEC STUDENTS PULLING OUT THE BAD PARTICLE BOARD FROM THE LAUNDRY ROOM.

5-24

MEASURING INSIDE THE LAUNDRY ROOM TO PUT UP CLEAN PARTICLE BOARD.

5-25

ETEC STUDENT MEASURES PARTICLE BOARD TO MAKE THE CUTS.

5-26

STUFFED THIS INSULATION UNDER THE CEILING AND ABOVE THE NEW PARTICLE BOARD.

5-27

PUTTING A WRAP ON THE JOB.

5-28

WHAT A TEAM!

5-29

BUT REALLY, ZOOM IN ON THESE FACES!

5-30

WELL DONE!

5-31
